World Record
Do you have children? Do you want to be part of a World Record attempt? If so, make sure you are on the Ponderosa at 3pm during Peace in the Park on Sat 4th June.
This year we will be attempting to break the World Record for number of adults reading to children at the same time.
The current record stands at only 255 adults (and in that case, there were 314 children being read to – but it is the number of adults that matters, as long as they each have at least one child to read to). With your support and the support of the local authors who have volunteered to adjudicate and Lions Children who have donated colour copies of the story ‘Tortoise Brings Food’ for this attempt, we have a chance to smash this record!

Until a few minutes ago Self Help Africa thought that the World Record attempt would be led from the community stage…it won’t be….for all of you eager to participate The Big Read will be held in an area between the children’s playground & community stage…near to the Library bus.
Apologies for any confusion caused.

Do the adults need to bring a child to participate in the world record reading, or could a childless adult turn up and be matched with a “spare” child?
Do unborn babies count, to be read to? (I have one with me)

I’m afraid that the official Guinness rules probably don’t allow unborn babies to count and there would almost certainly be child protection issues with matching up ‘spare’ children. However, if you come along with a friend with children, then that should be fine.

In addition to my job with Self Help Africa – who are helping to organise The Big Read – I am also a doula; so if your unborn baby decides to make an appearance, due to the excitement at being part of the World Record, then I can also help out with the birth if you like!
